At Riverside Bridge School, we believe that every pupil has a voice and should be supported to share their views in ways that are meaningful to them.

Our School Council provides a structured and supportive way for pupils to contribute to school life and help shape decisions that affect them.

This reflects Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which states that every child has the right to express their views and be heard.

What is the School Council?

The School Council is a group of pupils who represent the views of others across the school.

It includes pupils from all pathways and supports them to:

  • share their ideas, opinions and concerns;

  • take part in decision-making;

  • contribute to improving school life;

  • feel part of the wider school community.

Pupils are supported to communicate in ways that suit their individual needs, ensuring that all voices can be heard.

What does the School Council do?

The School Council meets regularly to discuss ideas and make a positive difference within the school.

  • They gather views from pupils across the school.

  • They share ideas with staff and senior leaders.

  • They help organise whole-school events and activities.

  • They support charity work and community projects.

  • They contribute to areas such as wellbeing, healthy lifestyles and the environment.

  • They help ensure the school is a safe, happy and inclusive place.

How does the School Council work?

The School Council is renewed each year in September.

Pupils are selected or supported to take on the role in a way that is appropriate to their individual needs.

Representatives come from across the school, reflecting different pathways, age groups and communication styles.

Pupils are supported to understand their role and contribute meaningfully to discussions and decision-making.

Through the School Council, pupils develop:

  • confidence and self-expression
  • communication and interaction skills
  • understanding of responsibility and teamwork
  • a sense of belonging within the school community

At Riverside Bridge School, the School Council plays an important role in ensuring that pupils feel heard, valued and involved in shaping their school experience.
